Resize Image to KB

Reduce an image to a target file size such as 20KB, 50KB, 100KB or 200KB while preserving the best practical image quality.

Upload a JPG, PNG or WebP image, choose your target size, and download the optimized result.

Supported formats: JPG, JPEG, PNG and WebP
Maximum recommended file size: 25 MB

Size: 0 KB

Dimensions: 0 × 0 px
KB
The final image will aim to stay at or below this limit.

JPG is often best for photographs. WebP provides efficient compression. PNG is lossless and may struggle with tiny targets.
×
Leave empty to scale dynamically while preserving aspect ratio.
Metadata disclosure: Canvas encoding in your browser naturally strips EXIF tags, GPS coordinates, and camera metadata, which helps protect your privacy and saves overhead bytes.
JPG does not support transparency. Transparent areas, if present, will be filled with a white background.

How to Resize an Image to KB

Reducing an image to meet an exact file-size requirement is straightforward with our three-step local processing workflow:

01

1. Upload your image

Select or drag and drop any JPG, JPEG, PNG, or WebP photo into the browser tool. Your file is read locally in memory.

02

2. Choose a target size

Click popular limits like 20KB, 50KB, 100KB, or 200KB, or type your exact required number in the custom KB box.

03

3. Process & download

The optimization engine automatically calibrates encoder quality and proportional dimensions, generating a ready-to-download file at or below your target.

Popular Image Size Presets

Different websites, application portals, and submission forms may enforce different file-size restrictions. Choose a popular preset below to configure the resizer:

20 KB
Avatars & Icons
50 KB
IDs & Portals
100 KB
Web Standard
200 KB
Applications
500 KB
High Quality
Custom
Any Limit
Different websites and forms may require different file-size limits. Always follow the current requirements shown by the service or form you are using.

File Size vs Image Dimensions

A common point of confusion when optimizing digital media is the distinction between file size and image dimensions:

File Size (KB / MB)

Measures digital storage space in kilobytes (KB) or megabytes (MB). A 100 KB file takes exactly 102,400 bytes of drive space.

Image Dimensions (Pixels)

Measures horizontal and vertical pixel count (e.g. 1200 × 800 pixels). Dimensions define the physical display area on monitors or canvas prints.

Having 1200 × 800 pixels does not automatically translate to 100 KB. The resulting file size depends on multiple variables: the graphic format (JPG, PNG, WebP), compression algorithm, color depth, image complexity, metadata payload, and fine texture details. A simple flat vector graphic can be 20 KB at 1200 × 800 px, whereas a noisy camera photograph at the identical pixel dimensions could be 600 KB.

JPG vs PNG vs WebP for Smaller File Sizes

Selecting the right format plays a critical role in hitting very small file-size targets without sacrificing visual clarity:

Format Best Suited For Compression Small KB Suitability
JPG JPEG
Photographs, portraits, rich color gradients, complex scenes Lossy Excellent (Aggressive size reduction)
PNG PNG
Logos, transparent graphics, sharp UI icons, text overlays Lossless Moderate (Needs dimension scaling < 50KB)
WEBP WebP
Modern web design, transparent illustrations, fast web apps Lossy & Lossless High (Efficient web compression with alpha)

* No single format is universally best in all conditions. JPG is generally recommended for complex photos, while WebP is optimal when transparency and low file size are both needed.

Why an Image May Not Reach the Target Size

Sometimes an image cannot be compressed below a strict threshold using encoder quality adjustments alone. Several factors contribute to this:

  • Very large dimensions: A high-resolution 48 MP photograph contains millions of pixels. Even high compression cannot pack millions of raw pixels into 20 KB without downscaling the resolution.
  • Complex texture & noise: High-frequency detail (foliage, grain, rough fabric, crowd scenes) produces more mathematical frequency coefficients, increasing compressed file weight.
  • PNG lossless constraints: PNG algorithms preserve every pixel exactly. Standard PNG encoders cannot drop quality in the manner of lossy JPEG compression.
  • Transparency channel overhead: Storing 8-bit alpha channels adds an extra byte layer per pixel compared to opaque RGB images.
  • Minimum usable quality thresholds: To prevent extreme pixelation, blur, or severe compression artifacts, the tool sets safe minimum quality bounds before downscaling pixel dimensions proportionally.
When compression alone is insufficient, the tool will progressively downscale the pixel dimensions while preserving the original aspect ratio to bring the file below your target.

Application & Examination Portals

Some application, exam, employment and government portals specify image file-size limits. Always follow the requirements displayed on the official form you are submitting. Be sure to check whether your specific portal requires specific pixel dimensions in addition to KB boundaries.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Upload the image, select 50KB as the target, process it, and download the optimized result. The final file will aim to stay at or below the selected target.

The tool aims to create an image at or below your requested size. The final file may be slightly smaller because image encoders cannot always generate an arbitrary exact byte size.

The tool first attempts compression while preserving dimensions. If the requested size cannot be reached efficiently, dimensions may be reduced while preserving the image's aspect ratio.

It depends on the image. JPG often works well for photographs, WebP can provide efficient compression, and PNG is useful for transparency and graphics but may remain larger.

PNG is generally a lossless format, so large or detailed PNG files can be difficult to reduce to very small targets. Converting to JPG or WebP may produce a smaller result.

Compression can reduce visual quality, especially at very small file-size targets. The tool should try to preserve the best practical quality while meeting the requested limit.
